Directions

DRIVE TO WHITIANGA FROM THE AUCKLAND AIRPORT
Approximately 2.5 to 3hrs non-stop driving taking shortest route.

Leave the international airport and make your way to the southern motorway, State Highway 1 (SH 1), driving south towards Hamilton. Up and over the Bombay Hills, at the bottom turn left onto SH 2 towards Thames/Paeroa/Tauranga. Carry along SH 2 past Mangatawhiri, Maramarua eventually turning left onto SH 25 to Thames. You will come to a single-lane bridge with traffic lights. Cross over into Kopu and at the end of this road there is a T intersection with a Mobil petrol station directly opposite. Driving to this location is relatively straight and flat on good wide tarsealed roads.

You now have two choices, with both roads being tarsealed, hilly, windy, slower and more narrow in places:

The first and fastest, approx 1.5 hours, is to turn right at the Kopu T intersection, drive for a kilometre turning left onto SH 25A to Whitianga/Tairua over the Kopu Hikuai Road. Once on the other side, SH 25A converts to SH 25 at the intersection to Whangamata. Do not turn right but carry on SH 25 moving north to Tairua. Whitanga is another 40 minutes north of Tairua.

The second choice, 2 to 2.25 hours, is to turn left at the Kopu T intersection and drive onto and through Thames on SH 25 following the coast road towards Coromandel Town. Just south and before entering Coromandel Town turn right staying on SH 25. Follow this road passing through Te Rerenga, Kuaotunu, and onto Whitianga. There are 2 further subsiditory routes to Whitianga which divert off SH 25 on the Thames to Coromandel Town coast road. Care is required if taking these 2 roads as they are both gravel roads and are called the Tapu Coroglen Road and the 309 Road.

DRIVE TO WHITIANGA FROM TAURANGA
Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours non-stop driving. Follow SH 2 north from Tauranga, travelling through Bethlehem, Katikati, onto Waihi. This road is relatively strait and flat all being tarsealed. At Waihi, turn right onto SH 25. Follow this road through to Whangamata and eventually Whitianga. It is tarsealed, hilly, windy, slower and more narrow in places. Carry on through Whangamata moving north on SH 25 to a major T intersection, left is Thames, SH 25A, and right is Tairua/Whitianga, SH 25. Take the Tairua/Whitianga road.
